Master Scrivener’s Corkboard, tackle the business of writing with expert Jane Friedman, and plan your next book effortlessly with Scapple!
Dear Writer,
What if the very thing that fuels your imagination also needs to pay the bills? Can you balance artistic freedom with the financial side of being a writer without compromising your craft?
For too many of us, creativity and the business of writing feel like they're in constant conflict. And if the pressure of balancing both isn’t heavy enough, there’s often that nagging voice echoing a tired claim—that writing for money is somehow “selling out.”
I used to wrestle with these doubts endlessly. But this truth became clear as time went on: Writers aren’t just artists—we’re also entrepreneurs.
Finding the balance between inspiration and strategy isn’t about restriction, but about expanding what’s possible. You don’t have to choose between staying true to your art and pursuing financial success. The most fulfilling writing careers are built when creativity powers the strategy to share your work with the world. It’s not about “selling out”–it’s about lifting up your ideas and giving them the life they deserve.
Romanticizing the idea of writing purely "for art's sake" can feel liberating, but it can also create an impractical standard to live up to. A successful writer doesn’t have to choose between inspiration and strategy. Instead, the goal is to merge them, finding equilibrium between the craft of storytelling and the practicality of sustaining it through business acumen.
If you’re caught in that tension, you’re not alone. And you certainly don’t have to figure it all out on your own. That’s why this Scrivener Webinar Week I’m excited to welcome a special guest to assist you with the business of writing.
Jane Friedman has spent 25+ years working in the publishing industry, guiding writers like you and me to build writing careers that thrive. Her book, "The Business of Being a Writer", is a landmark guide on navigating the industry and is used in writing programs across the globe. A second edition is set to release this spring, expanding on her insights into balancing creativity with entrepreneurship.
Beyond her book, Jane has advised organizations like The Authors Guild and Writer’s Digest, worked with the National Endowment for the Arts, and served on grant panels for programs like the Whiting Awards. She’s an absolute force when it comes to helping writers carve out successful, sustainable careers, and I’m so excited to hear her thoughts on unlocking the business side of writing.
